Careers in Video
If you're looking for a job with a Chicago video production company, I have some suggestions for you:
Good old fashioned networking can work. Join associations and attend all sorts of video related user groups, meetups, etc. to meet people who can either hire you directly, advise you, refer you to someone who knows someone, etc.
One of my suggestions to people who call my office looking for work is to check out the Creative Directory (creativedir.com). It contains many video and media related organizations that may be hiring. However, there are a slew of other directories where you can find video and media related companies that might hire you or give you an internship opportunity. Make your search nation-wide if necessary.
How We Find Employees
When I'm looking for talent, I advertise in Craigslist. It has worked very well for me since I've started advertising there.
People call and email me asking if they can send me their resume or a link to their reel. I honestly tell them that I won't keep it on file, as if I don't have an immediate need for a hire, I'm not going to look at it. If you weren't hiring, would you? And when I do need to make a hire, I want someone who is actively looking at the time. Sorry to be so honest, but no matter how charming you are, not many people can afford a hire unless they actually need someone at that particular time.
How an Employer Thinks
One of the best ways to get a job is to think like an employer. Put yourself in their shoes and you'll be better able to relate to them and their needs. Remember, the first job of any business is survival. And to survive and hopefully thrive, the company needs to have employees who care about the bottom line of the company.
An employer is first and foremost looking for people who will be able to help the company, be great at what they do, are enjoyable to work with, will work well with their clients and will at least consider the needs of the company. The bottom line is that the more the employee does for the company, the more the company will do for them. Or at least that's the way it should be. So it would be in your self interest to make the interviewer know that you understand these concepts at the interview.
Ask yourself some of these questions and you’ll be able to better relate to the person interviewing you:
- What skills, personality traits and other attributes does this person bring to the table?
- Are they friendly and personable?
- Will my clients like them?
- How can I prove that they have the skills needed for this position?
- What’s their work ethic like?
- Do they have their head screwed on right?
- Can they take the initiative?
- Will they go the extra mile for my company or just do enough to get by and get a check?
- How long will they stay at my company? Are they still going to look for work even after I hire them?
- How do they react to pressure?
- How do they react to feedback?
- Are they focused during the interview?
- Can they multitask?
See if you can ask, answer and verbalize other concerns an employer or interviewer may have.
I look at the standard things and just get into a conversation with prospective employees. Here are some things I check:
- I ask how they would rate their shooting and editing skills (no one should say they’re a 10! - always room to grow);
- how they dress for the interview;
- how forthcoming they are;
- how friendly they are,
- did they come to the interview on time
- did they bring an extra resume
- is their application filled out
- do they have good questions for me
Interning at a company is another way to get in the door. If they like you and the company is healthy, hopefully they'll offer you fill time employment. If not, you can possibly continue to intern with them indefinitely until you find a more lucrative job elsewhere. But at least you’ll obtain experience and a work history.
Google "video jobs" and you'll find more sites to explore.
The video production industry is very competitive. But if you have the passion and determination, you'll find some way to gain a foothold in this field. Then go from there. I hope at least some of these ideas were new to you.
A plus for Video One
I have been a client of Video One for 8 years. Client service has always been courteous, clear, fast and professional. I have used Video One for filming, editing, duplication and archiving. Over 50 jobs. All done perfectly and with courtesy and professionalism. open couldn't hope for better and friendlier, more efficient and more creative...
Professional, passionated, friendly and accurate.
As an European marketer I didn't had any video crew in Chicago. Via the Internet I found the Video One crew that immediately gave me a good feeling. Friendly but professional people who also are open and honest. During the shoot they turned out to be very professional and accurate. Thereby they are nice guys to work with, this is also a plus. They totally delivered what they promised.
Very flexible, very responsible, very professional!
Worked very well with this team, responded to our request very quickly and professionally from the first moment. The camera professional did a great job and was very helpful! Needed very little guidance! Look forward working with them again in the future!
Fantastic production exceeding our expectations!
Video One Productions produced 4 different Manatee Manners videos for Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge in 5 different languages, totaling 20 total different videos - all finalized in excellent visual and audio quality. I highly recommend the Video One Productions team for educational, instructional and informational videos. I am looking forward in working with Video One Productions in the near future in upcoming projects for Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River, FL. Thank you Video One Productions.
Prompt and Professional
I was only in touch for the pre-production coordination and was very impressed. Prompt replies to my emails, and very easy to work with. We had a bunch of moving parts, and were only able to send one staff member (which can be worrisome). Irwin and Jason kept my nerves at ease and clearly detailed every aspect of how they would handle the shoot for me. They took the time to work with me and find a package/price that best suited our needs. Friendly and reliable guys with a positive attitude. Can't beat that.
Tremendous Professional Video Work
The project was to take a 1 1/2 hour--20 year old DVD-- and cut and splice it to our specifications on to a new DVD. The transitions and blends their work produced made the final video seem as if it were the original product. Their work was fantastic. When a crisis arouse, they --in an emergency --provided 1 day turn around service --plus delivery. Totally unexpected service. I have already recommended them to another arts Board in Chicago of which I am a member. I'll be recommending VideoOne to another arts organization on whose Board I serve. Their work and contact information will be given to the 50 or so people who see this DVD described above.
Professional, delightful and talented
From the moment I contacted Irwin at Video One to the final excellent product filmed by Gavin, I was extremely pleased. My presentation in Chicago was captured beautifully. This company is easy to work with, thorough and detailed. I highly recommend Video One.
Fourth Estate Audio (Chicago Wedding DJ) Recommends Video One
Video One did a great job on Fourth Estate Audio's promotional video. I provided the pictures, video, script and narration, and Video One added the magic of professional production, transitions, graphics, animation and even the perfect music sting. But enough gushing. Video One Delivers
I have used Video One services numerous times in the last 15 years. Excellent service is the reason I keep going back to Video One. The company delivered its product to me when promised, at the price I was quoted, and the video quality was better than I expected or imagined. Video One has fresh, creative people to make you and your company look good.
I have been a customer of Video One for many years and the reason is because every time I need to have any video work done, Irwin and his staff make it so EASY to work with them that I never go anywhere else. I just completed a large job of converting our old family movies and videos to DVDs and they did an incredible job at a reasonable price and in a very timely manner. These guys are really great and deliver a high quality product. Thanks once again.
